Maribor 1681 — The Black Seal
Historical investigation · Medium → Hard
A physician discovers that some of the dead were never sick. Then he disappears — leaving the city itself as evidence.
Follow a vanished doctor's clues through historic Maribor and uncover a conspiracy hidden in plain sight.
Case 001 is finished and fully playable on the streets of Maribor, and before it goes on sale we are giving it away to a small group of test teams. This is not homework. It is roughly two hours of entertainment — a good way to spend a Sunday in Maribor with friends or family. Play it, enjoy it, and afterwards tell us what worked and what did not.

The same streets, two completely different games. Case 001 is an investigation: who did it? Case 002 is a mission: can we stop it?

An Ottoman army is closing in and the moat is dry. One apprentice volunteers to reach the water gate before sunrise.
Maribor, 1681. The plague is finally leaving the city. But the physician Johann Meran has found something worse: some of the dead were never sick, and some may not be dead at all. Before he can expose it, Meran disappears.
You pick up Meran's trail where he left it — in the death registers, the seals and the property transfers of a city still counting its losses. Fifteen steps take you across roughly eight historic locations, from the main square to the towers on the river.
Every lock in this case is opened by something physically present in Maribor: what is carved into a monument, what is written on a façade, what has stood in the same place for centuries. Nothing is guessed. Everything is deduced.
The locations, architecture and historical context of 1681 Maribor are real and researched. Johann Meran, Friedrich Wolf, Helena Wolf and the conspiracy itself are fiction.
A continuous walking loop through the old town and the riverfront. Every required observation is made from public space — no entrance fees, no opening hours.
Your score at the finale decides which title the case closes with.
You closed the case — with help along the way.
You read the streets well and needed few hints.
You caught the forgery before the case pointed at it.
Near-flawless. You saw the pattern several steps early.
A perfect case. You found what Meran himself never proved.
In 1532 an Ottoman army threatens Maribor. The city's defensive moat is dry because the water was never released in time. A young cobbler's apprentice named Jožek volunteers to reach the water gate.
Jožek disguises himself, leaves the city at first light by the fortifications and makes his way toward the Three Ponds below the Pyramid hill, slipping past — and sometimes walking among — enemy patrols. If he reaches the gate and releases the water, the moat fills and the city can hold.
You are not reconstructing what happened. You are running it. This case is a race with a clock, built on route decisions, patrol patterns and a multi-stage mechanism at the water gate.
The Ottoman raids and Maribor's fortifications are historical. Jožek's specific route and actions come from a Maribor legend, and the case says so plainly.
Follow Jožek's path. Reach the Three Ponds. Open the gate.
Save Maribor before sunrise.
